The Unnoticed One

Rating: G

When I got home, Avie was outside with her little friend, Jenn. How did she manage to get friends? I walked on. Mack and Zac were watching cartoons. Lord, I was more mature than those two. Taylor was on the phone with one of the chicks he had a crush on. Isaac was-wait, where was he? Probably on a date. And Zoë? Probably being fussed over by Mom and Dad. I walked into their room. Yep. I was absolutely right. I sat down on the bed.

"Jess," Mom said, "hand me a diaper." I picked one up and gave it to her. So that’s it. Gone for two whole hours and nobody even noticed.

Jessica stared out the window, trying with all her might not to cry. It didn’t work. A tear slipped out of her eye and rolled slowly down her cheek. The police had just come. The week before they had announced that this week would be the last week of the investigation and search. They were in the living room, talking to her parents. She didn’t want to listen. She felt sick. She sighed and wiped her face. And without a word, she walked out the door, letting it clang shut behind her. At the loud BANG! Mr. And Mrs. Hanson and the two officers in the living room turned. Mrs. Hanson sighed at her daughter’s retreating figure and turned back to the police.

“Jessie?” It was Zac. She turned around. She must have woken him up. “Where are you going?” She sighed and looked down at her hands. “I don’t know. Anywhere but here. I can’t stay here anymore.” “You mean you’re leaving? Home?” His voice sounded small and timid. Jessica nodded. “Don’t leave,” he said, rushing over to her. “You don’t have to.” She nodded, wiping away tears. “Yes I do. I can’t stay here anymore. It hurts to much,” she paused, then shook her head. “No, I can’t.” Zac looked down. “Yes, you can. It’ll go away. It’ll stop!” “No! It won’t! I can’t, I can’t!” Her words subsided to tears. And she fell into Zac’s arms. “I love you Zac. Tell everybody I love them, okay?”  He nodded. “I love you Zac.” “I love you too, Jessie.”   “Bye.” “Bye.” Zac released her with reluctance, and she left for the door. He watched her pull away out of the window, until he couldn’t see her anymore. Then he climbed in bed and lay there crying until he fell asleep. His sister was gone. She was gone, and she wasn’t coming back. He could’ve stopped her, but he didn’t. His Jessie was gone. Gone, and not coming back.
