Jessica watched through excited eyes as the family, the complete family, pulled up into the familiar driveway. She hadn’t been here in so long. It seemed a long time to her, anyway. She jumped out of the van-bus last and breathed in the air. Somehow, it seemed different. She smiled. It was good to be home.
“Dad?” she
asked. Her dad was unloading boxes from the van-bus.
“Yeah, sweetie?”
“Um…I’m gonna go
to Angie’s, is that…okay?”
“Sure honey.”
“Thanks!” She
skipped toward Angie’s house. With all the rush and surprise, she hadn’t had
time to talk to Angie since she emailed her when she first found out about Zac
and Mack. She couldn’t wait to see the look on her best friend’s face. She
easily walked the familiar route, and was soon at the door. She rang the
doorbell and waited, a lively smile breaking through. The door opened to reveal
Angie. Angie just stared at Jessica for a minute. The last time she had seen
her friend; she had been rained on and crying. Now she stood in the door,
smiling bright as ever.
“Jessica?”
“The one and
only.” She held open her arms and hugged Angie.
“I missed you,”
Jessica said.
“Me too,” Angie
said, a bit stupefied. “B-but, how-why are you here?”
“Duh. I live
here.”
“You do?!?!?!?!?”
“Yep. Have all
my life and I’m baaaaack!” Jessica smiled, her eyes dancing.
“I don’t want to
tell you the whole boring story, besides it’ll probably make you cry and I don’t
want that. Likewise, I have to go home and eat-“
“Jessica!” The
two blond heads turned to the street where, a block or so down, Zac was
standing, yelling and waving.
“Lunch,” Jessica
finished. Angie just stared at her the closed her in a hug. She looked back and
smiled at her.
“So I’ll see you
after lunch?” Angie questioned.
“Definitely. And
I’ll tell you EVERYTHING.” Jessica smiled and hurried down the stairs. She
walked down the street with Zac, waving back the whole way.
