Epilogue: Happily Ever After

“Mistakes I’ve made in this life, I can’t say why or when, but the thing that’s strange is you only live once, I’ll never look back again…” ---Hanson, Dying to Be Alive :)

I looked at the clock impatiently. 12:49. Everyone was supposed to come at 1. I was so…excited. That word sounds kinda stupid and juvenile, but it’s the only word to describe it.

I’m happy things have turned out they way they did. I’m glad I made this decision.

I jumped up at the sound of the doorbell. Somebody was here. Right before I opened the door, I vaguely wondered where the rest of my rather large family was. It was surprising that there was no one around.

I opened the door expecting to see the usual relatives, my grandma, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. So of course I wasn’t expecting who I saw. It was none other than Adriann Holly, Lucile Butler, Elizabeth Williams, and Marie Rosewood.

“Happy Birthday!!” they chorused.

I was speechless. I couldn’t say a thing.

“Oh my God,” I finally managed, but I doubt if anyone could actually hear it.

I was about to jump in and start hugging everyone, when all of a sudden the lights went off and I heard the first words of Happy Birthday to You.

‘Happy birthday to you…’

My family entered the room, and my mom was holding a huge cake.

I smiled, though I hardly knew what was going on. And Aunt Kate was standing next to her.

‘Happy birthday to you!’

The song finished and I blew out all the candles. All fourteen of them. Fourteen?? When did I get to be fourteen?

“Today, stupid.”

I looked up to Zac.

“Oh my God, did I say that out loud?”

He nodded, smirking.

I smiled and went to hug Adriann and Lucille and Marie and Elizabeth.

I was so happy. My family was here. My friends were here. I was so glad I had made the right decision. I was so glad to be Jessica Hanson.
