chapter one
I opened my eyes to see our living room. It was exactly the same, but filled with all my friends and decorated with brightly colored streamers and balloons. Vividly wrapped presents dotted various pieces of furniture around the room. There was a huge cake in front of me proclaiming: “Happy 16th Birthday Taylor!”
“Taylor!” Zac whined from across the room. “Blow out the candles.” I looked down at the cake and hesitated. After a moment I blew as hard as I could, blowing all sixteen candles out in one breath. Why was I here? I thought. My mind raced. This was definitely not the same time or place I had been in before. But one word explained it all. Zac.
With a sudden flash, I remembered it all. I had said if I could change one thing about my life, I wouldn’t be famous. That’s what this was. My life if I wasn’t famous. If today’s my sixteenth birthday, I thought, then today is March 14, 1999. Only a couple months back. I wonder why, though. Oh well, it doesn’t really matter.
“Hello??? Earth to Taylor!”
“Huh? Oh. What Ike?”
“Want some cake?” he asked, holding out a huge piece of chocolate cake.
“Oh.” I accepted it and went to sit by Will, my best friend. At least I still have most of the same friends, I observed, looking around the room. Really tell ya who your real friends are.
“So,” Will said, clutching an equally large piece of cake. “Ya gonna go take your driver’s test right away after the party?” That’s right. I don’t have my license yet. I shrugged.
“I dunno. If I can.”
“If you can?!?! I would right away! You are one strange dude.” I shrugged again, smiling. First of all I have to figure everything out first. This is gonna be really weird. Really different. Really normal. I smiled and proceeded to eat my cake. This was awesome.
